| Cap-and-Trade Energy Tax Bill | | Print | |

It appears that "cap-and-trade" energy tax bill could be the next major push in the U.S. Senate. Passage of this bill may result in $7 a gallon gasoline and doubled electricity costs. If you want to remodel or sell your home, a government inspector may show up at your house to verify that every appliance meets the latest Energy Star requirements and that a SmartMeter is being used. Veteran meteorologist Brian Sussman details this in his new book Climategate. Last year, the U.S. House voted 219-212 on June 26 to approve a "cap and trade" energy bill that could bring about the largest tax increase in U.S. history. Only 8 Republicans voted for the bill and 44 Democrats voted against it. Find out how your Congressman voted here. The tax would come in the form of a large increase in utility (electricity, natural gas, heating oil, etc.) and fuel costs at the pump. It will also cost the economy another trillion dollars and could result in 5 million lost American jobs. More industrial companies and manufacturing plants will almost certainly move overseas due to even tighter emission controls and higher utility costs. In Spain, cap and trade laws have resulted in the creation of some new "green" jobs. However, at least 2 other jobs have been lost for every job gained. As voiced on the House Floor by Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) it will cap energy production in the U.S. and trade off jobs to other countries. This editorial from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review sums up well the costs and effects of this proposed law. ACTION STEPS: 1. Call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and in their district offices to oppose and vote against this cap-and-trade bill. See our Coast2Coast state pages for information on state offices. 2. If possible, try to arrange a meeting with them (or at least talk to their staff members) in person at a district office. Most Senators maintain offices in all of the major cities in the state they represent. Details on these offices are available from the link in the first Action Step. 3. Contact and consider boycotting the companies listed here that are supporting cap-and-trade. 4. Pray that this will bill will not even come to a vote in the Senate or be defeated if it does.
